EDITH VALERIE DEMPSEY, 90, of Paris, passed from this life on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Spring Lake Assisted Living. Starrett Funeral Home will conduct graveside rites at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday December 16, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery, with Rev. Ken Cannon officiating.
The family will receive friends at 11 o'clock Wednesday at the funeral home, then will process to the cemetery for the service. Friends of the family may pay their respects at the home of Billy and Anecia Thomas at other times.
Valerie was born February 15, 1925, in Texarkana, AK. She was the only child of Annual and Edith Cleary. She moved to Paris, TX, in 1939 and graduated from Paris High in 1942. She married J.B. Thomas in 1945 and had two living children: Livia Thomas in 1955 and Billy Thomas in 1958. She worked for Stone Title Company for several years before transferring to Liberty National Bank, where she worked in the note department for over 30 years before retiring. She took great pride in her work and in herself as a person. She was a deeply spiritual woman and earnestly devoted to her family. She cared for her late husband, J.B., and her mother, Edith, in their final years of life, and she helped raise two of her three granddaughters. In 1998, she married the love of her life, C.A. "Red" Dempsey. They were married for 17 years and raised a four-legged child named Gunner Bill.
She is survived by her husband, C.A. Dempsey; her son, Billy Thomas, and his wife, Anecia; her daughter, Livia Thomas, and her wife, Sandy Fiesler; her granddaughter, Jordan Jackson, and her husband, Jonathan; her granddaughter, Gracie Thomas, and great granddaughter, Josephine Jackson; and her cousin, Buddy.
She is preceded in death by many family and friends, most notably her parents and her first husband; her daughter, Betty Lou Thomas; her granddaughter, Meredith Lynn Thomas; and her beloved dog, Gunner.
Named to serve as pallbearers will be Arturo Guzman, Victor Guzman, Luis Calderon, Jorge Perez, David Mebina, and Valentin Cruz.
